Cut in CNG Price: Transport mafia refused to reduce fare

ISLAMABAD: Despite remarkable cut in the prices of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), the transport fares could not be reduced in the country as transport mafia flatly disregarded the idea of Supreme Court to provide some relief to the masses.

The Supreme Court’s Eid gift to the general public has been stolen by the transport mafia as transporters have not yet reduced its fares despite massive reduction in the prices of CNG last week. The commuters who were returning from their native lands to their places of duties/businesses paid high fares. Rickshaw and taxi drivers were also compelling the commuters to pay their demand fares, as they also want to make most on the eve of Eid at the cost hapless public. The general public has urged the government to take stern action against the transport mafia and force them to slash the transport fares in proportion to the low cost of CNG.
They demanded that the Regional Transport Authorities and the Traffic police should be given clear directives to enforce the new fares that could benefit price-stricken masses.

The government had already implemented the CNG prices in the light of the Supreme Court decision and for the purpose Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) had also sent the interim order of the Supreme Court to all chief secretaries and asked them to ensure the sale of CNG on new prices.

Adviser to the Prime Minister on Petroleum and Natural Resources Dr. Asim Hussain had taken notice of the non-implementation of the court order on Friday and directed OGRA to send inspection teams for opening the all closed CNG stations. He had said that action would be taken against all those CNG stations which were not ready to sale the CNG on new prices and also warned to revoke their licenses.

Following the Supreme Court Order the prices of CNG on last Thursday slashed by Rs.30.90 per kilogram, which was later notified by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority.

The new price of CNG is Rs 61.64 in Region 1 which include Punjab and Khyber Pakhtwankhwa provinces while the new price of CNG in Sindh and Balochistan provinces has been fixed at Rs 54.16 per kilogram. After the government decision the CNG owners body in a statement has urged the owners to sale the gas on new prices instantly. Ghayyas Piracha, Chairman All Pakistan CNG Association has said in the statement that they will file a review petition in the Supreme Court tomorrow (Wednesday).
